DEAR Editor. In light of recurring attacks and the escalating insecurity ravaging Plateau State, there is an urgent need for government at all levels to take strategic and deliberate action to curb the violence threatening the peace and survival of communities.
Plateau State, celebrated for its rich cultural diversity and natural beauty, has in recent years witnessed disturbing patterns of violent clashes and attacks. These tragic incidents not only claim innocent lives and destroy property but also undermine economic development and weaken social cohesion.
Bearing in mind the devastating effects security challenges have on the overall development of the state, the following key observations and recommendations offer possible solutions to tackling insecurity:
Community engagement: Strengthening dialogue between government agencies and local communities will help build trust and facilitate intelligence-sharing, which is critical for
preventing attacks.
Enhanced security presence: Strategic deployment of security personnel in vulnerable areas, coupled with modern surveillance technologies, could serve as a strong deterrent to aggressors.
Addressing socio-economic factors: Poverty and unemployment often provide fertile ground for manipulation by violent groups. Initiatives that promote economic opportunities can help reduce recruitment into such groups.
Interfaith, inter-ethnic collaboration: Plateau’s diversity should be seen as a strength. Promoting harmony through cultural, religious and traditional leaders can reduce tensions and foster peaceful coexistence.
Intelligence gathering, sharing: Better coordination among security agencies, supported by local intelligence from community leaders, may help pre-empt attacks before they occur.
In view of the above, I make the following appeals to governments at all levels:
Proactive measures:
Both the Plateau and federal governments must prioritise comprehensive security strategies that combine immediate response with long-term preventive measures.
Support for victims: Adequate care and rehabilitation for displaced persons and survivors of attacks remain crucial for healing, rebuilding and sustaining community resilience.
The people of Plateau State deserve nothing less than safety, peace and an environment where they can thrive without fear. Addressing insecurity requires a multifaceted approach that blends security measures with socio-economic interventions and robust community partnerships.
It is my hope that the government at all levels will heed this call to action and work together to safeguard our communities.
