In a significant shift away from the skinny jeans that dominated the fashion scene for years, baggy jeans have emerged as the new favourite among Gen Z.
The trend is not just about aesthetics, it is also about comfort, self-expression and sustainability.
“Baggy jeans have become a staple in many Gen Z wardrobes due to their comfort and practicality,” said Shola Dan, adding that she goes for them because they are “perfect for everyday wear. Whether it’s for casual outings or just lounging around, these jeans offer a relaxed fit that appeals to me and the younger generation.”
According to Blessing Epmen, “The rise of baggy jeans also symbolises a rejection of traditional beauty standards and a desire for individuality. Gen Z is embracing the trend as a way to express themselves and stand out from the crowd.”
Epmen attributes the popularity of this new fashion trend to “Platforms like TikTok and Instagram who have played a significant role in popularising the baggy jeans trend. Influencers and celebrities sporting the style have also contributed to its aspirational appeal, inspiring Gen Z to follow suit.”
Mallam Batur Mai Gwanjo, a second hand clothes seller in Bukuru, says, “The baggy jeans trend is more than just a fashion statement, it’s a reflection of Gen Z’s values and priorities. With its comfort, practicality, and sustainability, it’s clear why baggy jeans have become the go-to choice for this generation—it’s the reason half of the bale I bought is made of baggy jeans.”
However, he said, only a handful of the older generation patronise it.
“They see it as a Gen Z thing, which is bad.”
