Local authorities have reported the detection of a new case of polio in the Southern Afghanistan Uruzgan province, spokesman for the provincial government Samiullah Akrama said on Monday.

According to the official, an eight-month-old girl was infected with the virus and cannot move her arm, both legs, and neck.

At least nine polio cases have reportedly been registered in Afghanistan so far this year amid government efforts to eradicate the crippling disease among children in the post-war nation.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are among the few countries in the world that are yet to eradicate the wild polio virus. (Xinhua/NAN)
