The Plateau State Government has commiserated with the victims of a train accident which occurred at the state capital on Wednesday.

The state Commissioner for Transport, Davou Gyang, in a statement on Thursday described the incident as tragic and painful, and prayed for the quick recovery of those injured in the accident.

“We mourn with the families affected by this sad event, it is indeed a painful loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time,” Gyang said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident occurred on Nov. 5, at Phototek Junction, Abattoir Community in Jos South Local Government Area of the state.

According to preliminary reports, a passenger train travelling from Bukuru to Jos collided with a tricycle that attempted to cross the railway line, resulting in the loss of lives and injuries to others.

Gyang added that the tragedy underscored the need for road users to always exercise caution and patience, especially around railway intersections.

The commissioner further appealed to motorists, tricycle operators, and pedestrians to adhere to traffic rules and safety signs at railway crossings, warning that disregard for such regulations endangers lives.

He assured residents that the ministry would work closely with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and relevant agencies to conduct thorough investigation into the incident and prevent future occurrences.

The commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the government to enhancing transportation safety through effective public education, enforcement of traffic laws, and improvement of safety infrastructure across the state. (NAN)
