Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has honoured and rewarded athletes who represented the state at the 22nd National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, tagged ‘Gateway Games 2025’, describing them as true ambassadors and embodiments of the Plateau winning spirit.

The governor made the declaration during a special reception ceremony held at the Victoria Gowon Hall, New Government House, Little Rayfield, where cash rewards were presented to medallists in appreciation of their outstanding performances.

Governor Mutfwang, in his remarks, praised the athletes for bringing honour to the state through their exceptional achievements in gymnastics, athletics, taekwondo, weightlifting and other sporting events.

“Our athletes have once again proved that Plateau State remains the home of champions. You have brought pride and glory to our dear state through your outstanding performances in gymnastics, athletics, taekwondo, weightlifting, and other sporting events. This is only the beginning of greater things to come,” he said.

As a gesture of encouragement, the governor announced ₦1 million for each gold medallist, ₦750,000 for silver and ₦500,000 for bronze in individual events.

For team sports, winners received ₦5 million, ₦3 million and ₦2 million, respectively.

Governor Mutfwang emphasised that his administration’s commitment to sports development goes beyond financial rewards, noting that deliberate measures are being taken to reform sports structures, upgrade facilities and improve welfare for athletes and coaches.

“When we came in, we discovered that some of you had to borrow money to attend competitions. We decided that must stop. Today, athletes receive their allowances and logistics support directly, without any interference. This government means business,” he assured.

The governor also revealed that plans are underway to transform the Plateau State Sports Council into a Sports Commission to enhance collaboration with private investors and expand opportunities for local and international participation.

He cited the ongoing rehabilitation of the Rwang Pam Stadium as evidence of his administration’s resolve to provide world-class facilities.

“We are determined to make sports a strong pillar for youth empowerment, social cohesion, and economic growth. Sports in Plateau will not just be for entertainment but a strategic tool for peace and development,” Mutfwang added.

Responding on behalf of the athletes, Team Captain, Mr Ayuba Weyi Kadiya, lauded the governor’s sincerity and support, describing him as “a talk-and-do leader.”

“Your Excellency, for the first time, we received full support for transportation, allowances, and preparations. The transformation we see in the stadium and sports administration today is a direct reflection of your visionary leadership,” he said.

In his remarks, the Director of Sports, Professor Ezra Gunen, expressed gratitude to the governor for trusting him with the task of revitalising the sports sector after three decades in academia.

He commended the governor’s transparency and timely release of funds, which, according to him, had restored confidence among transporters, private sponsors and sports associations.

“For the first time, our athletes received all their entitlements without delay. This marks a new era for sports in Plateau. With the governor’s vision and commitment, we are reclaiming our rightful place as a hub of talent and excellence,” Professor Gunen stated.

He added that, the award ceremony, coming shortly after Plateau athletes’ impressive outing at the National Sports Festival, reaffirmed the Mutfwang administration’s dedication to sports as a key driver of youth empowerment, peace and economic progress.
