The Super Eagles of Nigeria have secured a place in the final of the African World Cup qualifiers after a hard-fought victory over the Panthers of Gabon.
Ekpng Adams opened the scoring for Nigeria when he capitalised on a defensive blunder, slipping through the Gabonese backline to tap in a faulty back pass for the curtain-raiser.
Star striker Victor Osimhen came close to doubling the lead moments later, but the Gabonese goalkeeper was quick to deny him an early goal.
The Super Eagles dominated the first half with 62 percent ball possession and six shots on target, maintaining control and composure throughout the period.
Gabon thought they had won a penalty after one of their players was brought down in the 18-yard box, but the referee overturned the decision following a VAR review.
The second half saw a more determined and purposeful Gabonese side, as they pressed relentlessly for an equaliser. Their efforts finally paid off less than 10 minutes before full time when L. Lemuna struck to level the score, sending the match into extra time.
Seven minutes into the extra period, Nigeria regained the lead through C. Ejike, who calmly slotted home to make it 2–1.
Osimhen then stamped his authority on the game with a thunderous strike from the right flank in the 102nd minute, extending Nigeria’s lead.
The Napoli forward wasn’t done yet, as he showcased his trademark brilliance to bag a brace, sealing a convincing 4–1 win and propelling the Super Eagles into Sunday’s final.
