Following Saturday’s suspension of Nyesom Wike and other national officers of the PDP, the Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, has distanced himself from the move, noting that the action did not emanate from the PDP Governors’ Forum.
In a statement issued by Gyang Bere, the Governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Governor Mutfwang clarified that the matter “was neither discussed by Governors Forum nor at NEC before the motion was presented.”
He stressed that the proposal does not reflect his position.
He further argued that expelling senior party figures at such a critical moment was not a strategic approach to resolving the internal challenges confronting the PDP.
He emphasised the need for unity, dialogue and collective effort in rebuilding and repositioning the party.
He added that only a cohesive and stabilised PDP could regain national relevance and electoral strength.
Earlier on Saturday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had expelled Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the former PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, along with several other high-profile members, over what it described as “serious anti-party activities.”
In a statement, the National Working Committee (NWC) confirmed that the affected individuals had been expelled with immediate effect.
Others expelled included former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose; Hon. Umar Bature; Adeyemi Ajibade, SAN; Mohammed Abdulrahman; Senator Mao Ohuabunwa; Hon. Austine Nwachukwu; Abraham Amah; George Turner; and Chief Dan Orbih.
According to the PDP, the decision followed extensive deliberations and investigations into longstanding allegations of misconduct.
The party said the expulsions were necessary to “restore discipline, uphold the party’s constitution, and strengthen its internal democratic structure.”
Political analysts suggest that the development could significantly reshape the party’s internal dynamics ahead of upcoming elections.
They note that several of the expelled individuals were influential political actors in their respective regions.
Our correspondent reports that this marks one of the most high-profile disciplinary actions taken by the PDP in recent years.
