Plateau United’s Nigeria Premier Football League woes continued Thursday as they suffered a 2–1 home defeat to Rivers United, a result that further complicated their fight against relegation.
Rivers United’s second away win of the season lifted the Pride of Rivers to second place on the league table with 30 points from 15 matches, keeping them firmly in the hunt for the top spot.
The hosts started brightly and appeared to be in control early on when Nenrot Silas fired Plateau United ahead in the 20th minute, raising hopes of a much-needed victory.
However, Rivers United returned from the break with renewed intensity. David Boluwaji Sholumade restored parity in the 53rd minute, reigniting the visitors’ belief and shifting the momentum of the contest.
The comeback was completed late in the game when Aniekeme Okon delivered a dangerous cross that forced Plateau defender Wisdom Ndon into an unfortunate own goal, sealing a dramatic victory for the visitors.
The defeat leaves Plateau United 17th on the table with 18 points from 16 matches, deepening their relegation worries. The Peace Boys now face a crucial home clash against league leaders Nasarawa United this weekend — a must-win fixture if they are to revive their season.
For Rivers United, who have suffered just one defeat in 15 matches, confidence continues to grow under coach Finidi George. They return to Port Harcourt to host Wikki Tourists, knowing that victory — coupled with favourable results elsewhere — could send them to the summit of the NPFL standings.
