Tragedy struck the University of Jos community in the early hours of December 11, 2025, as a fatal road accident claimed the lives of a driver and eight students returning from a night party.

The accident, which occurred at about 2:00 a.m., involved two buses conveying students from the same event.

Reports indicated that one bus was carrying female students, while the other conveyed male students.

According to eyewitness accounts, the crash happened when the driver of the bus conveying the male students attempted to overtake the other bus.

In the process, a trailer reportedly rammed into their vehicle from behind, leading to the fatal collision.

Dominic Dantala, one of the survivors of the accident, confirmed that both buses were travelling together from the party when the incident occurred.

He explained that the impact from the trailer caused severe damage to the bus, resulting in multiple fatalities on the spot.

Emergency responders and passers-by were said to have rushed to the scene to rescue survivors.

Two of the injured victims were reportedly taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where medical personnel battled to stabilise them.

Among those who lost their lives were prominent student leaders, including the President of the National Association of Plateau State Students (NAPSS), University of Jos chapter, Comrade Miapkop Magnus.

Also confirmed dead was the President of the Faculty of Science Students Association (SOSSA), Angelo Gyang Gokyo.

Other union officials from various faculties of the university were also reported dead.

The incident has thrown the university community into deep mourning, with students and staff describing the loss as devastating, particularly because of the leadership roles many of the victims held.

The accident has cast a sombre mood across the campus, with students and staff gathering for candlelight vigils in memory of those who lost their lives.

As investigations continue, authorities have reminded the public to exercise caution on the roads, especially during late-night hours, to prevent further tragedies.
