The General Manager of the Plateau Publishing Corporation (PPC), publishers of THE NIGERIA STANDARD Newspapers, Mr Chris Gyang, has expressed concern over the declining number of journalists in the organisation, which he said gives him sleepless nights.
Mr Gyang spoke during a courtesy visit by the Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), PPC Chapel, on Monday.
He lamented that many staffers were expected to retire next year, but commended the Plateau State Government for its support.
“I am glad to say that the state governor has been very magnanimous to us, helping us to manage this situation. This is the second time PPC is enjoying great patronage from the government, and the Mutfwang-led administration must be commended for it,” he said.
On discipline, Mr Gyang emphasised that while it was commendable that the organisation had been scheduled, some staff were still not committed to their work.
“People don’t care about their jobs anymore. I believe in what a person can do regardless of position. Now that there is a need to improve the quality of THE NIGERIA STANDARD, staff must sit up. Results must be seen because this organisation is an industry,” he stressed.
The GM assured the NUJ Chapel leadership of his support at all times.
Earlier, the NUJ Chairman, Mr Hosea Nyamlong, formally introduced the new executives and called for collaboration to achieve the organisation’s goals.
He highlighted challenges, including manpower shortages and the need for government attention and commended the GM for improving THE NIGERIA STANDARD’s quality and content, noting that further progress required additional manpower.
