In a recent development, Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS), has charged Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to court. The move comes after an Abuja High Court issued an order to either charge Emefiele to court or release him within one week.

According to DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya, in a statement released recently, this action was taken in compliance with the court order. He mentioned that the DSS had previously applied for a court order to detain Emefiele in relation to a criminal investigation in 2022.

Although the former CBN boss had obtained a restraining order from an FCT High Court, he was arrested by the DSS in June 2023 based on suspected new criminal infractions. One of these infractions serves as the basis for the current prosecution.

The DSS assured the public of professionalism, justice, and fairness in handling this matter, emphasizing that they will fulfill their duties within the confines of the law.

The case against Godwin Emefiele is expected to proceed in court, and more details about the specific charges and legal proceedings are yet to be revealed.
