The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rescheduled the March 18th, 2023, Governorship and state House of Assembly elections in Kwande Local Government Area to Tuesday 21 March 2023.

Benue State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Professor Samuel Egwu told newsmen at the INEC Collation Centre, Makurdi in a press conference Monday that the clarification became necessary following speculations trailing the suspension of both Governorship and state House of Assembly election in Kwande Local Government Area.

Professor Egwu said after due consultations with stakeholders and other interested parties from the affected local government, the commission has fixed the exercise on Tuesday 21 March 2023 as approved by the commission’s headquarters Abuja.

On whether the commission will declare the overall winner even if result from Kwande Local Government Area where elections are yet to be conducted are yet to be known, the REC asserted that it would amount to academic exercise should the commission do that. He added that until results from the 22 local government areas are collated before the commission will decide whether to announce the overall winner on wait for result from Kwande Local Government Area to be presented before final declaration.

He explained that conduct of the governorship election is guided by law and the commission will not for any reason operate at variance with the provisions of the Electoral Law.

It will be recalled that INEC had suspended conduct of the Saturday 18th March, 2023 Governorship and state House of Assembly election in Kwande Local Government Area following what it described as printing error where ballot papers meant for Kwande West state constituency were exchanged for Kwande East state constituency.
