THE Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has re-elected Comrade Chris Isiguzo, as its National President for another term of three years having diligently served the union for the last three.
The President was elected unopposed at the 7th National Delegates Congresses held at Dr Michael Okpara Auditorium Umuahia in Abia State, where delegates from all states of Nigeria trooped in to election their officials.
Others elected alongside Isiguzo were Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi, as the National Deputy President, Dele Atunbi (National Treasurer), Samuel Dada, (National Financial Secretary), Ladi Emmanuel, (National Internal Auditor), Christopher Atsaka (Vice President Zone D), Abdul Aji, (Secretary Zone D) with others officers of respective Zones who were mostly elected unopposed.
The newly elected President commended members for the show of confidence in his leadership and promised to restructure the Union by constituting a committee that would review the Union’s Constitution to address issues of indiscipline and other professional misconducts by its members.
He expressed great concerns over the unfortunate incidents that led to unwarranted court cases that nearly thwarted the conference and appealed to members to always seek alternative means of dispute resolution rather than going to courts.
Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Reagan charged journalists to ensure that they play their role as prescribed by the Constitution to ensure that issues of insecurity are addressed through their reportage.
Declaring the conference opened, Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu who was represented by the State Commissioner for Works, Elder John Ugo, appreciated the union for the choice of the state to host its conference and enjoined journalists to ensure they take a tour round the state and report the developmental strides in the state.
SUNDAY STANDARD reports that, the National Delegates Conference went on peacefully as there was a paper presentation on “The Media in Times of National Renewal”.
