NPC commissioner applauds census trial exercise

Federal Commissioner, National Population and Housing Census, representing Plateau State, Hon. Mrs. Cecilia Dapoet has applauded the commission for a successful census trial exercise.

Dapoet stated this during a press briefing to update the general public on the just concluded census trial that was conducted in 9 Local Government Areas in Plateau State between July 20 and 30, 2023. This was held at the commission’s headquarters in Jos, last Wednesday.

She expressed that the exercise went peacefully as the house numbering and household listing was completed within the number of days allotted.

She added that the enumeration of persons was successfully conducted and completed in all the enumeration areas except where persons within legible households were not at home all through the period of enumeration

Dapoet, who was represented by the State Director, Mr. Pam Deme said that the census trial was aimed to test the commission’s instruments of data collection, logistics and the capability of staff preparatory to next year’s 2023 general census.

He noted that there is need for more public awareness campaign and this requires the

media and other critical stakeholders to take the message down to the community level to push forward the census message through discussion, community meetings, on the ground to draw attention and to reinforce the importance of census.

He pointed out that the commission alone cannot achieve it with its meager resources at its disposal, but would continue to engage the media and other stakeholders to enlighten the public on the importance of census.

The state director maintained that the commission would continue to inform, educate the public to retain their roject, so that together we can achieve the success.

Deme reiterated that the census data is imperative for planning and implementation of development programmes by government.

He appreciated the cooperation and support of the State Government, Local Government Council chairmen of the 9 LGAs, where census trial were conducted, traditional rulers, security agencies, schools who offered their facilities to be used for the training of functionaries and the citizens of Plateau State in ensuring that the exercise was a success.
