Parents are to be blamed for children’s

PARENTS have been blamed for contributing to the vice indulged by their children by providing them with expensive phones, even when their age bracket do not require such.

This was the opinion of Mrs Jennifer Yarima, the Featues Editor of THE NIGERIA STANDARD.

Yarima stated this in her capacity as a Guest Speaker when she presented a paper titled “The Effects of Social Media on Students Academic Performance” during the Speech and Prize Giving Day of Salvation Army International Academy Jos, Plateau State, held at the school hall, last Wednesday.

She appreciated the organizers of the event, the school hierarchy and stakeholders for finding her worthy to do justice to the above mentioned paper presentation. She added that such occasion also enables them to evaluate with sober reflection the kind of values they were able to impact on the lives of their loved ones.

Mrs. Yarima pointed out that the social media provides people with an ample opportunity to interact with one another and also provides a suitable platform not only for learning but to equally exchange ideas and other forms of expression.

She explained that the transformation of the social media can be seen in the way and manner the younger generation, particularly children have embraced it for their usage. Adding that this advancement has been further fueled by human determination and impulse to communicate through advanced digital technology.

The guest speaker encouraged parents to continue having interest in the future of their children, especially now that these younger ones have continued to face several distractions in the society. She noted that one of the major problems confronting children as they journey through the path of the educational career have been these little distractions and peer pressure.

Mrs. Yarima while speaking on the disadvantage of the social media disclosed that it’s a platform for socialization that destroys the good moral values in most children and even adults. She pointed out that parents and teachers need to advice appropriately. She pointed out the students who spend much time on social media can suffer from poor sleep, eye fatigue which can disrupt effective learning.

She then congratulated, students, teachers who have given their best to make what these children are today and also the parents for doing the needful which has led to the graduation of the wonderful set of students they were celebrating.

Earlier in his remarks, principal of the school, Mr. Emmanuel Mathew expressed delight and thanked God for making the event a huge success. He said that the academy has placed great emphasizes on developing good practical, moral and sound principles that would guide the students in making decisions and striking a balance between wok and leisure.

Mr. Mathew commended the entire staff both teaching and non-teaching for the good work that they are doing in the school. He further explained that the school has also made a lot of efforts to inspire the students with a desire for self-improvement and achievement of excellence.

Also in a message to the graduants, Assistant Superintendent, Stephen Ezenduka told the graduants to maintain all their good dreams on what eve they want to become in their future studies. He also advised parents to support their children’s good dreams so as to make it a reality.
