Plateau pledges support for SURWASH

THE Plateau State Government has reaffirmed its readiness to support the extension of the Nigeria Sustainable Urban, Rural Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) projects in the state.

Plateau State Commissioner of Finance, Grace Shwarta Dongkum, gave this assurance while playing host to a team from the World Bank’s Federal Programme Implementation Unit of SURWASH during a courtesy visit in her office at the J.D Gomwalk Secretariat, Jos, recently.

Dongkum appreciated the World Bank and the Federal Government for choosing Plateau as one of the beneficiary states for SURWASH scheme.

She said the project was very important as it was geared towards improving water and sanitation in the urban and rural areas of the state.

Dongkum declared that the Mutfwang administration was poised to provide safe drinking water to its citizens.

She added that the state government was willing and determined to ensure the success of the projects in the state.

The commissioner pointed out that, because without sanitation water could be polluted, the present administration was not leaving any stone unturned in its pursuit of the monthly sanitation exercise.

Also receiving the delegation in his office, the Plateau State Commissioner for Water Resources and Energy, Noel Nkup, noted that the visit would further strengthen their support for the extension of the programme in the state.

Leading the delegation on the courtesy visit to the two commissioners, Practice Manager, West Africa World Bank, Anna Costar, disclosed that their mission was to carry out SURWASH mid-term review on the implementation of the project in the state.

She remarked that Plateau State had been proactive about the project and stressed the need to further simplify it.

Costar pointed out that the programme focused on results or inputs and assured that they would achieve their target at the end of the programme.

Our correspondent reports that the delegation included the federal ministries of water resources, finance and environment, among others.
