NURTW set to reposition union

The forum of National Union of Road Transportation Workers (NURTW) in Pankshin, Kanke and Kanam Local Government Area branches recently held annual quarterly executive officers meeting at the Pankshin branch secretariat of the union.

It called on the government at all levels to roll out palliatives to cushion the effect and hardship faced by the common man due to the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government. Adding that the removal of subsidy is directly affecting the transportation industry nationwide.

The forum in the resolutions reached at the meeting and read by the forum’s chairman, Mr. Nandir Danjuma who is also the branch chairman of the NURTW Kabwir said they are in support of the giant step taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the removal of the fuel subsidy, which he said is long overdue. But called on the presidency to judiciously channel the fuel subsidy money to better the lives of the entire citizens of Nigeria through the execution of meaningful projects that have direct bearing on the lives of the people, especially in areas like road construction and maintenance, health, education, agriculture and the transport sectors among many others.

At the end of the meeting, the forum went for an advocacy visit to the zonal office of Pankshin, Kanke and Kanam Local Government Areas Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) in Pankshin and later paid a courtesy visit to the office of the Pankshin Unit of Federal Road Safety Commission Commandant, CRC Abdullahi Santali Maikasuwa, and Pankshin Areas Command.

Speaking while in the different offices: the Zonal Inspection Officer’s office, and those of the FRSC and Nigeria Police Area offices, the chairman of the forum, Mr.Nandir Danjuma said they were in his there to officially welcome the VIO boss and newly transferred FRSC boss to Pankshin to solicit for their support and cooperation in their activities as union officials and at the same time as transporters.

They further pointed to them that the advocacy visit shall also afford them the opportunity to interact and explore areas of collaborating with their offices amongst other benefits, so that together they can move the Pankshin Zonal Office forward.

He added that they were also in the offices to solicit for a cordial/working relationship between the National Union of Road Transport Workers and officers and men of Pankshin Zonal Vehicles Inspection Office, that of FRSC and the Police Area Commands.

In his response, the Pankshin Zonal Vehicles Inspection Officer, Mr. Danladi Dakup Gokir thanked the officials of the union for the visit. He assured them of his maximum support and cooperation at all times, when the need arises. Gokir, however called on the union officials to always advise their members to avoid overloading, high speed and warned that his office will not take it lightly with any of their members that refuses to adhere to the laid down rules.

He emphasised on the need for the union and their members to always give priority to the maintenance of their vehicles, especially defects in motors to include screen wipers, signal lights, headlights
While speaking in the office of the FRSC boss, the Pankshin unit commandant of the federal road safety corps (FRSC) CRC Abdullahi Santali Maikasuwa said he appreciated the visit of the union to his office as it was timely because he needed to get acquainted with the relevant stakeholders in the road safety sector as he is newly posted to the unit command, and this will make his work easier for the benefits of the entire road users and the transporters as they are the sole stakeholders in the sector.

Maikasuwa was quick to remind the union officials to keep to their words earlier mentioned by the forum chairman, adding that if they failed in discharging their duty as the union officials, then officers and men of the road safety corps will leave no stones upturned in the discharge of their duties and he advised them to keep on educating and enlightening their members against disobeying roads rules and regulations attached to road using, especially in areas such as over speeding, over loading refusal to use the seat belts when driving, unnecessary over taking at dangerous bends, don’t drink and drive and don’t make phone calls while driving.

He assured the union officials of a cordial working relationship between his office and the NURTW forum, he added that the FRSC and NURTW are partner in progress for a long time since the establishment of the corps in 1988 and promise that the existing relationship will continue for the sake of the safety of the people in Pankshin unit command of FRSC and the state at large.

The newly formed forum officials of the union in Pankshin, Kanke and Kanam Local Government Area (PKK) include: Mr. Danjuma Nandir as chairman, Alh.Yahaya Garba as Deputy Chairman, Mr. Alex Deshi as Secretary, Alh. Hamza Zubairu as Treasurer, Mr. Zaya Gomam – ex-officio and Deputy Chairman, NURTW Forum Plateau Central Zone, Mr. Victor Dimka, Secretary Kabwir branch as member, Alh. AliyuIsah Maina, secretary Dengi branch – member and Mr. Tapshakka Dimka, chairman Kabwir branch (2) as members.
