Seek legislation that would better your lives – Piyo

Plateau State Deputy Governor, Mrs Josephine Piyo has urged women in Nigeria and Plateau State in particular to seek legislation that would better their lives in the society.

Piyo gave the charge when the Standup for Women Society (SWS), a non religious and non political organization with a national and international spread geared towards the cause of women and children, paid her a solidarity visit at the Old Government House, Rayfield, Jos, recently.

The Deputy Governor who described women as the backbone of the society, decried the lack of support among fellow women seeking for political offices as responsible for their political emancipation.

She observed since 1999, women have not been able to meet their 35 percent affirmative action due to lack of support for each other. Piyo observed that aside from their dwindling political fortunes, they have also been subjected to all forms of I’ll treatment including domestic violence.

She explained that women were good managers but that they shouldn’t expect their male counterparts to fight for their right until they come together and fight for their course.

Piyo who was elated by the visit, appealed to women to support the Barrister Caleb Mutfwang’s administration to deliver on its mandate to the people of the state. She also commended the governor for choosing her as his Deputy, assuring that she will not disappoint the women.

Earlier, Chairperson, Standup for Women Society, Plateau State Chapter, Mrs Grace Gora had explained that they were on a solidarity visit and appreciated the governor for the choice of a woman as his deputy.

She disclosed that the organization was non religious and non political with the Sole aim of bringing together all women at the grassroot who are left without care, and to give meaning to their lives.

While pledging to support the government, Gora however called on it to join hands with SWS to train the women especially the indigent ones in skill acquisition as well as encouraging them to air out their views.

The organization, she said plans to form a cooperative society to act as a platform to give out soft loans to women after empowering them with skills. Gora also advocated for stringent laws against domestic violence.

She sympathised with government over killings in Mangu, Barkin Ladi and Riyom LGAs and encouraged the governor not to be deterred by these enemies of peace in the state.

Also on a solidarity visit were a coalition of PDP Female Youths in the state who came to identify with the government on their emergence at the polls.

Led by the state Coordinator, Comrade Kaneng Pam who pledged their continued loyalty and support to the Mutfwang’s administration in the state.
