As the world commemorates International Day for Disaster Risks Reduction (IDDRR), a group, Elim Christian Vocational Training Centre has advocated equal rights for people living with disabilities.

Executive Director, Elim CVTC, Mr. Emmanuel Egbodo told journalists recently in a press briefing at the premises of Brothers FM Makurdi, that this year’s theme was in line with Elim’s vision for supporting and building capacity of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups to enjoy full participation in safe and inclusive society.

He said Elim CVTC was committed to promoting empowerment and inclusion of persons with disabilities and other vulnerabilities by facilitating equal access to sustainable development and community services through partnerships and collaboration with all relevant stakeholders.

According to the executive director, the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction was not merely an observance but a rallying call to bring organisations, agencies and communities worldwide on a common platform.

He explained that the commitment of Elim CVTC to this year’s theme emphasises the collective responsibility of governments, organisations and individuals in addressing disparities and promoting equitable and sustainable societies.

Mr. Egbodo maintained that as the human population continues to grow and the frequency of natural disasters increases, there is a greater need to reduce the risks of death, destruction and loss. He added that risk reduction systems create essential frameworks that help people, communities and countries minimise harm to their residents.

In a remark, the executive secretary, Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), Sir James Iorpuu while commending Elim CVTC for organising the celebration in the state, said the event was in line with the vision of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s administration to lower the impact of disasters in the state.

Sir Iorpuu pledged on behalf of the state government to partner with Elim CVTC to create awareness and mobilise the people to reduce inequality for those with disabilities.

The theme for this year’s commemoration was “Fighting Inequality for a Resilient Future”
