The Vice-Chancellor of University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, has disclosed that the newly admitted students of the university have no excuse not to read and make good grades.

Adebowale made this disclosure during the matriculation ceremony for the newly admitted students of the institution.

A total of 3,792 students were cleared for the 2022/2023 matriculation ceremony spread across various faculties in the institution.

The students were led in the matriculation oath by the Registrar of the institution, Mr Ganiyu Saliu.

The VC who spoke through the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Professor Aderonke Mojisola Baiyeroju, noted that the university is a place of freedom, but the freedom is guided by rules.

He charged the students to manage their newfound freedom responsibly while in the university.

Adebowale, further noted that the university is a place of freedom, where nobody wakes students up in the morning to attend classes.

He also warned that there are established rules guiding engagements in the university.

He urged them to find out the rules and do their utmost to keep the rules and remain on the right side of the law.

He said most of the students probably for the first time in their lives are having absolute freedom.

The Vice-Chancellor urged the students to receive all rounded training from the university by making use of sporting facilities, joining registered clubs, participating actively in student unionism, and practicing their religion without imfringing on the rights of others.

He admonished the new students that whatever they make out of the university and what they turn out to be in life, are both functions of how they manage their freedom.

Adebowale advised the students to take advantage of the enormous digital and non-digital resources of the Central Library, faculty libraries, and the functional reading rooms in the halls of residence.

“You have no excuse not to read and make good grades. As earlier stated, the university is a place of freedom, but it is freedom guided by rules. There are established rules guiding engagements in the university.

“You are expected to find what the rules are and do your utmost best to keep the rules and remain on the right side of the law.

“For those who will run afoul of the law, the Students Disciplinary Committee is the organ of the university through which they will be proceeded and sanctioned if found guilty of any misconduct.
