Active mobile subscriptions reach 220,715,961 – NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that the number of active mobile subscriptions in the country has reached 220,715,961 million as of August 2023.

The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, disclosed this at the 18th Abuja International Trade FAIR. He stated that the number of active internet subscribers was 159,034,717 million, with broadband penetration at 45.57% as of the same period.

Danbatta emphasized the importance of businesses in Nigeria leveraging new technologies and acquiring necessary digital skills to compete internationally. He noted that the competitiveness of Nigerian businesses depends on their ability to adapt to the digital landscape and stated that NCC’s regulatory efforts in deepening access to digital services will benefit Nigeria, contributing to job creation and GDP growth.

To sustain the growth of the telecoms sector, Danbatta assured that NCC would continue to create a conducive environment for the deployment of robust broadband infrastructure, improving the quality of service for consumers and enabling industries transition into ICT-driven sectors.

The Director of NCC’s Consumer Affairs Bureau, Mr Umar Alkasim, reiterated the commission’s commitment to ensuring fair competition and a level playing field for all stakeholders in the telecommunications industry.

Alkasim stated that NCC is safeguarding the interests of consumers and protecting them from unfair practices in the telecom service value chain through various consumer-centric initiatives.

The announcement highlights the significant strides made in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, as the country continues to expand its mobile and internet connectivity. This growth presents opportunities for businesses to embrace digital technologies and contribute to the country’s economic development.
