ASUSS urges government to prioritise welfare of members

The Kaduna State chapter of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Nigeria (ASUSS) has urged the state government to prioritise the welfare of secondary school teachers in the state because they impact on the future of students’ produce and their careers.

The call was made by the chairman of the union, Comrade Isaiah Dauda, during the 2023 World Teachers Day held in Kaduna recently.

The chairman noted with dismay the impact of teachers’ welfare, not only on their families but pointed out that it has a direct impact on students in terms of quality service delivery.

According to him, ” The welfare of a teacher has a direct impact on his family, students and his employer in terms of quality service delivery.”

”Secondary schools tutors in Kaduna State deserve an increase in their salaries and other welfare packages, so as to stimulate them to redouble their energy towards better service delivery in the education sector in Kaduna State.”

”An increased in the teachers’ minimum wage and other welfare packages, such as provision of accommodation for tutors within the school premises to ease hardships, re-introduction of science allowance for science tutors, introduction of rural allowance to tutors working in rural areas, provision of soft loans to tutors and introduction of hazard allowance to our members will enhance better service delivery in education sector, ” the Kaduna ASUSS Chairman said.

Meanwhile, in his lecture, the guest speaker, Dr John Silas of the College of Education, Gidan Waya, emphasized on the need to be objective in the area of teaching and learning.

In the same vein, the representative of the Director General of Quality Assurance, Mrs Mercy Binta, implored the state government to employ more teachers. She also tasked every teacher to look inward through self examination, adding that self- examinations are one of the qualities of a good teacher.

In his speech, the representative of the Commissioner for Education, Labaran Hassan who is also the Deputy Director Public Schools in Kaduna, extolled the importance of teachers as mother of all professions.

Labaran said, the theme of this year’s World Teachers Day: “The Teachers We Need For Education We Want “, is very apt. And pointed out that the teachers should come up with a proposed plan on how to bring back out of school children.
