Declare state of emergency on illegal mining – Reps

The House of Representatives has asked the government to declare a state of emergency to tackle illegal mining.
Similarly the green chamber has also asked the government to set up a committee comprising the police, military, DSS, Nigeria Immigration Service and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to flush out all illegal miners. This is coming on the heels of a motion sponsored by Hon, Abdillahi Halims.

Speaking on the motion, Hon, Halims said mineral resources in Nigeria can be tapped to create jobs and boost the economy. He called for urgent interventions from the government and radical measures to address the issues affecting the solid minerals sector and its under performance.

He stated that the minerals sector contributed just 2.62 percent of the governments #6.63trillion total revenue. The motion was unanimously adopted after contributions from members on the floor of the House .
