The Air Force (NAF) has received praise for its significant role in curbing the illegal proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria. Major General Abba Dikko (Rtd), the National Coordinator of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), applauded the NAF for its commitment and efforts in addressing this pressing issue.

During his visit to NAF Headquarters, Major General Dikko highlighted the NAF’s invaluable assistance to the Centre, particularly in the transportation, storage, and security of seized weapons. He commended the NAF’s dedication to ridding the nation of small arms and light weapons through collaborative efforts, intelligence gathering, and airlifts.

Furthermore, Major General Dikko requested the influence of Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), in advocating for the passage of the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Bill 2023, currently under review in the Senate of the National Assembly.

In response, Air Marshal Abubakar acknowledged the successful working relationship between the NAF and the centre since its establishment in May 2021. He emphasized the direct link between the proliferation of small arms and light weapons and the heightened levels of insecurity in the country. Recognizing the importance of the centre’s efforts, he expressed his satisfaction with their contributions to curbing the illegal spread and flow of arms in Nigeria.

Air Marshal Abubakar also lauded the establishment of a comprehensive database for legitimate and illegitimate arms in the country. This database will assist security agencies and the Federal Government in developing appropriate strategies for managing weapons and ammunition.

He assured Major General Dikko of the NAF’s continued support in achieving the centre’s mandate to control the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

The commendation from Major General Dikko and the support from the NAF leadership highlight the vital role of the NAF in addressing the issue of illegal arms proliferation in Nigeria. The collaborative efforts between the NAF and the NCCSALW demonstrate the commitment of both organizations in promoting national security and working towards a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
