Benue IDPs: Camps rise to 17 – SEMA

The Acting Executive Secretary, Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Sir James Iorpuu, has confirmed the rise in the Internally Displaced Persons camp to seventeen, following renewed attacks by Fulani herdsmen.

Speaking at the distribution of food and non food items to displaced persons in Makurdi on Monday, sir Iorpuu listed the new camps to include Afiagh, Ayati, Iorja and Kyado in Ukum Local Government Area where some victims are living with their relations.

According to him, catering for IDPs in the state was beyond the financial scope of the state government, noting that in spite of the development, the Alia administration was taking care of them within the available resources.

The SEMA boss further revealed that following the visit of Minister of Humanitarian and Disaster Management to the state, the agency has received bundles of zinc, cement and wood for the construction of a cluster housing scheme at Mbagwen in Makurdi Local Government Area in which work will commence soon.

The National Emergency Management Agency, according to Sir Iorpuu, has donated 6 pieces of wrappers to the 14 camps, 300 men wears, 150 mattresses, 300 children wears and 200 blankets.

He explained that due to activities of some hoodlums, the agency decided to distribute items in Makurdi while other camps will take their turn on Tuesday.

Items distributed were 4,200 25 kg of rice, 2,810 bags of 25 kg of beans, 2,370 25kg of gari, 4,155 cartoons of indomie, liters of groundnut; 191 liters of red oil and 433 cartoons of Maggi while sugar was 266 bags.

Others to benefit from the food items are the rehabilitation center, Apir, Special School for the Deaf and Dump at Vandeikya and Aliade in Gwer East Local Government Council respectively.
