Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) has commenced desilting of blocked drainage systems in the Jos and Bukuru metropolis.

The exercise was flagged-off around the ECWA Goodnews, Ahmadu Bello Way, Jos, where makeshift structures were removed to make way for clearing the blocked drainages.

PEPSA Director-General, Samuel Nathaniel Dapiya, revealed that the agency had engaged additional staff to assist in the exercise which would last 10 days.

According to him, the campaign was taking place preparatory to the onset of the rains to ensure free flow of water in drainages to prevent incidences of flash floods within the Jos and Bukuru environs.

Dapiya also called on citizens, particularly the youth, to take ownership of the exercise by mobilizing friends, neighbours and groups to clear drainages, stressing that their obstruction could impact negatively on the environment.

The General Manager of the Jos Metropolitan Development Board, Hard Dankat, described the exercise as timely, considering the indiscriminate dumping of waste which was capable of causing floods.
