Lawmaker empowers widows, other beneficiaries

To mark his one hundred (100) days in office, the member representing Kanke Constituency at the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon . Joseph G. Gokum has empowered widows and presented items to other beneficiaries from his constituency.

The beneficiaries include the Director General Gyem Juryil Campaign Organization, eighteen (18) ward coordinators, three (3) zonal coordinators, thirty one (31) delegates and two hundred (200) widows/ beneficiaries. Items presented include musical instruments, 40 leaves exercise books and cash incentives.

In his opening speech during the occasion which took place at Sharam, Kanke Local Government Area, the lawmaker said the gesture was in fulfillment of the promises made which is to render quality service and assistance to his people who gave him the mandate to serve.

According to him, as the commemoration of his hundred days in office drew near, he thought to himself that what better way to mark it than to identify and celebrate with his constituents by sharing in some of their problems.

Hon. Gokum who said he grew up in poverty, without access to three square meals each day, assured that he will continue to look for ways of assisting the poor of the poorest members of his constituency.

Also present at the occasion, is the member representing Pankshin North Constituency and YPP Whip, Hon. Gabriel Dewan Kadengbenna who said he was in Kanke to support and show solidarity to his colleague and brother, who is celebrating his hundred days in office.

Hon. Kadengbenna emphasised on the need for the people to be united, adding that they must understand that their representative is of the opposition and might not get enough resources. As such, they should be appreciative of the little while advising those who may not get to exercise patience.

According to him, Kanke constituency is made up of eighteen wards while that of Pankshin is about ten. He advised the people to be wary of comparison, and that as lawmakers each have their different agendas and blueprint.

He however, disclosed that as members of the state assembly, no dime has yet been given to any member as constituency allowance, stating that people seeing them doing one or two things think they collected money for it.

Highlight of the occasion was the presentation of a modern set of musical instruments to Pargol Dance Group, an Ngas cultural group based in Kanke, exercise books to primary school pupils and cash incentives to about two hundred beneficiaries.

One of the beneficiaries, Nde Anthony, who is the leader of the Pargol Dance Group, expressed gratitude to the lawmaker for the gesture, promising that they will be used to further promote the Ngas culture and heritage to the world.
