PLHA condemns incessant attacks on Mangu villages

In a matter of urgent public importance, the Plateau State House of Assembly (PLHA) has condemned in its totality, the continuous attacks on Mangu Local Government Area by Fulani herdsmen with the latest being Chisu and Bwoi villages where many lives were lost and properties destroyed.

This was contained in a motion moved by Hon. Bala Fwangje, member representing Mangu South constituency and seconded by Hon. Bala Noma, who is the member representing Kantana constituency.

Hon. Fwangje who called on his colleagues to lend their voices by condemning the act, wondered why his numerous calls for intervention to stop the unwarranted killings of his people has not yielded any result.

Members in their separate contributions condemned the killings, describing life as sacred which should not be taken by anyone, for whatever reason.

They called on the state government to ensure it fully funds and equips the Operation Rainbow, advising that the local vigilante and hunters groups should be encouraged and carried along in the fight against insecurity since they were closest to the people in the villages and communities.

The Rt. Hon. Speaker, Moses Sule in his submission resolved that security agencies in the state must rise up to the occasion and defend the citizens, while also calling on NEMA and SEMA to come to the aid of affected communities by providing relief materials.

Also, members were instructed to visit the various IDP camps with the view to sympathising with the affected persons, sharing in their pains and encouraging them in this trying times, even as a one minute silence was observed for those who lost their lives in Mangu,
Riyom and Barkin Ladi recently.

Meanwhile, in view of the fact that Section 104 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) provides that a House of Assembly shall sit for a period of not less than one hundred and eighty one (181) days in a year.

And in view of the fact that the 10th assembly of the Plateau State House of Assembly commenced its first session on Tuesday 13th June, 2023, there was need to set out and adopt by resolution the first session of legislative calendar.

Subsequently, the House during Thursday’s plenary resolved that the total sitting days for the first session of the 10th assembly, commencing 13th June, 2023 and ending 13th June, 2024 will be one hundred and eighty five (185) days excluding public holidays while total recess period will be ten (10) weeks.
