PLHA makes case for roads affected by gully erosion

The Plateau State House of Assembly (PLHA), has called on the state Ministry of Works to as a matter of urgency, address the gully erosion that has affected some roads in parts of Jos North West constituency.

This was contained in a matter of urgent public importance, and through a motion moved by the member representing Jos North West constituency, Hon. Danjuma Azi during Tuesday’s plenary.

According to the lawmaker, his attention was drawn to a deep gully erosion that has eaten deep into the road leading from Dong to Bassa, precisely before the police checkpoint, endangering the life of road users.

The attention of the House was also drawn to Angwan Mission and Ikukumu communities, where the bridge connecting both from Kabong to Tudun Wada has been washed away by heavy rainfall making it difficult for residents to move about.

He disclosed that the contract for the road construction which was awarded in 2015, has since been abandoned after just a little work carried out with no reason given by the contractor.

Members in their various contributions agreed that the cosmopolitan nature of the constituency cannot be overemphasised, since most ethnic groups in the country reside there and that whatever affects the area, affects almost everybody.

The need to educate and enlighten residents on taking care of drainages was also brought to the fore while they unanimously called on the state Ministry of Works to act immediately before lives will be lost.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Moses Thomas Sule resolved that the contractor handling the road project should be called upon to explain why the work was abandoned.

The House therefore, resolved that the Ministry of Environment should take adequate measures in ensuring that wastes are properly disposed, so as to avoid drainage blockages.

The Ministry of Works was also called to swing into action on the roads in order to properly address this life threatening issue.
