The Chief Medical Director, Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, Dr. Stephen Hwande says the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) is now set to commence medical services at the Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital, Makurdi.

He promises that Benue citizens will have access to the best and affordable medical services they deserve under Governor Alia’s administration.

He made this known to SUNDAY STANDARD recently after taking a facility tour of Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital, Makurdi preparatory to commencement of medical services.

Dr. Hwande expressed appreciation to Governor Hyacinth Alia for his interest in the healthy well-being of Benue people, pointing out that his pro-activeness was the reason why the Federal Government did not take back the hospital from the State Government due to under utilisation.

The Chief Medical Director said with full commencement of medical services such as IVF, out patients, health insurance, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology as well as mild surgery would be offered to the people at a rate that could be afforded by the common man. He added that antenatal cards for children under five would be free.

The CMD said even though the primary role of the Teaching Hospital was at the tertiary level, the hospital would still use its manpower to supervise and assist secondary and primary health facilities across the state with a view to improving the health condition of the state.

He disclosed further that expired medicines worth over one hundred million naira are to be publicly destroyed by management of Benue State University Teaching Hospital, BSUTH.

The Chief Medical Director, who said the public destruction of the expired medicines was necessary for him to start on a clean slate, expressed worry on why medicines of such amount would be allowed to expire in a state that has so many IDPs and others that needed them.

The Coordinator of the Hospital, Dr. Luper Uva, stated that although the hospital was built for only women and children, the new Chief Medical Director, Dr. Stephen Hwande thought it wise to add a General Outpatients Department to enable men also to get treatment at the facility.

Dr. Uva thanked the Chief Medical Director for ensuring that the hospital operates as an electronic medical record facility which would make services efficient and easier.

“We have solar systems where uninterrupted light, water and other amenities operate all day”, he said.

The 120 bed Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital was built by OSSAP-SDGs, Abuja 2021 Sustainable Project.
