District head organises annual cultural Durbar

The District Head of Lame, one of the kingmakers in Bauchi Emirate and Sarkin Yakin Bauchi, Alhaji Aliyu Yakubu Lame, has organised an annual cultural durbar which attracted each community in the district to showcase its heritage. That event thrilled spectators and provoked exultation as it gladdened the heart and minds of spectators in remembrance of Late First Sarkin Yakin Bauchi, Mallam Muhammadu Mamman Kusu.

Alhaji Aliyu organized the annual durbar in his effort to promote peaceful coexistence, unity of purpose and cultural development in the emirate and to remember the legacies left behind by Late Sarkin Yakin Bauchi, Mamman Kusu who fought the war during the reign of Shehu Usman Danfodio

Our correspondent who was at the venue of the event, reports that spectators were enthralled by the exhibition of dances and other displays by various cultural troupes, while hunters honoured the occasion with several gun shots in the air. Decked in their different costumes, the troupes matched in a procession to the stage to display in Lame Central Primary School 

Also, entertaining spectators were Fulani, Jarawa dancers, dancers from Dass, other neighbouring districts, villages and hunters who displayed their prowess with bows and arrows and guns.

Among the Dignitaries at the occasion were the Barden Kudun Bauchi, Dr Hayatu Mustafa, Chigarin Bauchi, Alhaji Sanusi Yakubu Wanka, Rector Federal Polytechnic Kaltungo, Dr Suleiman Lame, Katukan Bauchi, District Head of Toro and many traditional and community leaders. Thousands of people from all walks of life attended the occasion.

Speaking to SUNDAY STANDARD at the Lame Palace, Dr Hayatu Mustapha Barden Kudun Bauchi commended the SarkinYakin Bauchi, Aliyu Yakubu Lame for his effort to unite his people, to promote peace and security and to remember the legacies and contributions of our fallen heroes like Mamman Kusu towards the development of Islam.

He said Aliyu Sarkin Yaki has set a pace for others to follow and commended him for the peace enjoyed in his domain. He said, “ We can’t do or achieve this stride without realigning our culture, even as incredible feats have been reached and can be attained using our culture”.

On his part, the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Kaltungo, Dr Suleiman Lame, stressed the importance of the event and explained that natives could only be identified by showcasing their culture and tradition, noting that they should not allow other Nigerians to come and show them their cultures. He appreciated the district head and members of his council for promoting peace across the state, emirate, Lame District and the country at large. 

The Chigarin Bauchi, Alhaji Yusuf Yakubu Wanka, prayed for continuous peaceful coexistence among diverse ethnic groups and called on the youths to continue to remain loyal to constituted authorities. 

The convener of the Durbar, Sarkin Yakin Bauchi, Alhaji Aliyu Yakubu Lame, explained that the event served as a symbol of strengthening the bond of unity and togetherness of the good people of Lame district and some parts of the North Eastern states.

Alhaji Aliyu said that the event was organised in line with government’s policy and programme of promoting culture and tourism for development. He said our fore fathers like Late Mamman Kusu who fought Jihad with Yakubun Bauchi, first Emir of Bauchi during the reign of Sheikh Usman Danfodio left a legacy which his descendants and the society have to remember and emulate because they lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation. 

The District Head said Late Mamman Kusu, even though he was a strong warrior, he was also an Islamic scholar who left a lot of legacies which his descendants and other people will know during such events. He urged his subjects to take their children to schools and train them in skills that will be purposeful to their future and the community. 

He thanked the Bauchi State Governor for his untiring support to Toro LGA, the Emir of Bauchi, traditional rulers and district heads, personalities that come from all parts of the country that witnessed the occasion and wished them safe return to their respective destinations “including my colleagues, journalists who gave total coverage to the prestigious occasion,” he said.
