Two killed in Taraba ethnic clash

The Police in Taraba have confirmed the death of two persons as a result of an ethnic clash between the Wurkun and Karimjo in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The Police Spokesman, Abdullahi Usman, who confirmed the incident to The Nigeria Standard said security forces have been deployed to the area and that the situation has been put under control.

“There is a clash between Karimjo and Wurkun. The mobile police and conventional police have been deployed. The military are already there. The situation is relatively calm. There is fear of reprisal, but the situation is calm. So far, we have registered two casualties,” he disclosed.

A reporter with the state radio station, Amos Adamu also told The Nigeria Standard that the incident started as a result of chieftaincy tussle between Karimjo and the Wurkun community.

The new chief of Wurkum, Yakubu Abubakar Haruna, was coronated and presented with the Staff of Office, which went against the wishes of the Karimjo community, says Adamu.

According to him, protests by one of the warring parties led to a clash with the attendant burning of homes.
