High Court in Shendam adjourns forced marriage case

STATE High Court sitting in Shendam, Plateau State, has adjourned hearing in a case between the Commissioner of Police and Naanmi Daniang, involving fifteen (15) year old girl who was abducted and forced into marriage by the accused who already had over twenty wives.

When the matter was first mentioned for hearing before Hon. Justice G. D. Fwomyong, Counsel to the defendant, E. N. Dawam, said, his client was absent and apologized for the inability of his client to appear before the court because of ill health and that, he was currently in Karim- Lamido, Taraba State.

The prosecuting council N. K. Tali who came prepared for the hearing argued, but later agreed to wait for the decision of the court and reappear on the scheduled date for the next hearing.

While presiding over the case, Justice Fwomyong, told counsel to the defendant to take responsibility of bringing his client on the next adjourned date, since he has been served with surety on ground that his client would not escape, hence the need for him to find the where about of his client.

He earlier wondered why the defendant who hailed from Bakin Kogi of Shendam Local government area would be said to be in Karim-Lamido of Taraba State, describing the matter as suspicious and ordered all parties  not bring any excuse, but must appear before the court when next the court sit.

However, the Judge refused to sign the court summon filed by the prosecuting counsel, on ground that, the accused person was absent and has changed location to Taraba state.

He therefore, adjourned the case to October 21, 2021 for next hearing.
