Plateau attacks: Lawmaker calls for full investigation

The lawmaker representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. Fom Chollom Dalyop has called for a full investigations on the recent genocidal attacks on three local government areas of Plateau State.

The attacks which took place on Christmas eve affected some communities in Mangu, Bokkos and Barkin Ladi, and as expected was greeted by condemnation from all quarters, including personalities from within and outside the country.

In a press statement issued by Hon. Dalyop, the attacks left more than two hundred people dead with several others injured and presently nursing wounds from guns and machete cuts, while properties worth billions of Naira were also destroyed leaving many in IDP camps.

The lawmaker who in the company of the Sector 4 Command troops visited the affected communities of Hurum and Darwat in Gashish district of Barkin Ladi, disclosed that the dastardly attacks were not only well coordinated, but also simultaneously executed.

He noted that the attacks which lasted more than four hours happened when the victims were celebrating the joy, peace and love associated with the Christmas season, confirming the wickedness and intent of the perpetrators.

He however, commended security agents who he said might have responded to the people’s distress call on time but added that they may also have been hindered by the difficult terrain of the area.

While commending the immediate response of the president who sent a delegation led by the Vice President Kashim Shettima to visit the affected communities, he appealed that the killers should be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

The member expressed hope that the presidential directive would yield the desired fruit in no distance future, as this will not only bring succour to the affected communities, but also serve as deterrent to the perpetrators.

He also urged security outfits to take advantage of this directive and ensure that the needful is achieved, adding that the affected areas needed to have adequate air surveillance in order to assist the troops understand the mode of operation of the bandits.

The federal lawmaker also called for the immediate dispatch of relief materials to the survivors, most of whom are in IDP camps, adding that compensations for properties lost should be made while urging all those affected to remain calm and law abiding.
